American Toad
Bufo americanus
Largest Toad in Illinois up to 10cm TL. Color can vary and change individually. Large “kidney bean” shaped paratoid gland. Cranial ridges are more pronounced than other toads. Cranial ridges will connect to the paratoid gland. Each colored spot dorsally will have no more than three warts. Rear legs will have small tibial spurs, that other toad species lack. Chest will be buff with dark mottled spots. Males are smaller than females.
