Silvery Salamander
Ambystoma platineum
Silvery Salamander—Ambystoma platineum
Medium up to 17cm TL. Costal grooves usually number 13. Dark in color with silver or blue spots on its back and sides. Genetic testing is required to separate them from Jefferson’s Salamander (Silvery are triploid). These are thought to be hybrids of A. laterale and A. jeffersonianum. Females require sperm of other species to breed, no new genetic information is passed to offspring.
