Medium sized 10-14cm in total length. 12 costal (vertical) grooves on each side, four toes on the front feet, five toes on the rear. Bluish black with light blue flecks along the body and down the tail. Males deposit spermatophores (sperm packet) in the Spring. They are known to hybridize with triploid species of Ambystoma.
